Exotic Derivatives are complex financial products traded by specialist dealers in an Over The Counter (OTC) dealer network. There appears to be no agreed definition for exotic derivatives, other than that they are any derivatives that do not full under the banner of simple derivatives, often referred to as plain or vanilla derivatives, such as swaps, futures, options and forwards. An exotic derivative has features that make it more complex than vanilla derivatives. They may have been created specifically to match a particular client's requirements or in response to specific market trends or events.
Examples of exotic derivatives include:
Overnight swaps.
Amortizing swap.
Swaptions.
Barrier options.
Binary options.
Bermudan options.
Rainbow options.
Cliquet Options.
Working with exotic derivatives requires expert understanding of markets and financial products and a high level of mathematical and statistical modelling skills.
