Job Description

Mutual funds, or investment funds, or managed funds, offer private investors a way to invest in a variety of financial products and markets without having to make investment decisions or arrange transactions. Mutual funds use their investors' funds to make a wider range of investments than would be feasible for individual investors.

Mutual funds are managed by experienced fund managers who often have a track record of success over many years of investing in financial markets and products. Investors use mutual funds to gain access to fund managers' expertise as well as access to financial products and to mitigate risk and share costs with other investors.

Mutual funds often focus on particular markets or products, for example Emerging Markets, and also tend to favour the particular territory in which they are based - UK fund managers might focus on the UK markets due to familiarity and also do eliminate the risks associated with trading in foreign currencies.

Job opportunities in mutual funds include:

  • Fund Manager.
  • Fund Accountant.
  • Fund Controller.
  • Analyst.
  • Researcher.
  • Sales and Marketing.

Qualifications

Entry level roles usually require undergraduate degrees and a solid academic record. More senior roles may require specific qualifications, for example in accountancy and investment management.
