Interview techniques for winning job offers

We are currently going through one of the worst recessions in living memory. There are on average over 60 applicants for every open post and for many, applications can run into the hundreds. It is no surprise therefore that even getting called to an interview is a challenge.

If you are lucky enough to get that interview invite don't waste the opportunity. Brush up on your interview skills and refresh all the interview techniques and tips essential for success.

It is so easy to forget some small detail and as a result lose the job. This article will help remind you of those key interview techniques which can make all the difference between success and failure.

Maintain a positive attitude

Interviews can be stressful for many and it is easy to lose heart especially if you have been to a number of interviews and not had an offer. It is essential that you keep a positive attitude and a belief that you are right for the job. This attitude applies not just to the preparation but on the interview day itself.

Your behaviour will be observed throughout and you need to make a good impression on everyone you meet. For example, when you approach the reception desk, smile and in a friendly and confident manner state your reason is for being there. Remember you never know who in the building is close to the person who is interviewing you so make a good impression on as many people as you can; this way after your interview you will be remembered as a candidate who was polite and friendly.

Remember the small things

It's the small things that count in the interview so make sure you switch off your mobile phone before arriving at the interview location. Don't chew gum, fidget or take notes. Be attentive and smile confidently. Take care with your dress and accessories and avoid taking any unnecessary baggage into the interview with you.

Arrive on time

Arriving on time is key and we suggest that you time your arrival about ten minutes early. There are a number of reasons as to why this is best; this gives you time to relax and clear your head prior to meeting your potential employer. It also means if there are any forms that you need to fill in you can do them while you are waiting so you aren't cutting into any of the time spent actually in the interview process.

First impressions count

The impression you make in the first 2 minutes of the interview could result in success or failure. A positive first impression is vital to your chance at securing the job you have applied for and you must take every step to ensure this first impression is a good one.

What your body says

Although you will be measured on your verbal communication skills remember that any non-verbal clues you give will be taken into consideration. Your body language says a lot about your attitude and ability; how you sit in a chair, how you maintain eye contact, how you move can all communicate different aspects of your personality.

Be aware of the messages you are sending with your body language. Enter the room confidently; approach your interviewer with a smile and a handshake. Sit up straight and lean forward slightly as this demonstrates that you are committed and hard working but also interested in what is being asked of you and spoken to you.

Rest your hands loosely on the desk or in your lap and avoid fidgeting with your clothing or hair. This can be distracting and will emphasise your nervousness.

Remember to ask questions

You will be given an opportunity to ask questions, usually at the end of the interview. Ensure you have a list of questions prepared and use some of them when necessary. This will demonstrate your interest in the job and show that you have considered yourself actually in the post.

Avoid questions about salary or benefits as these can give the wrong message. There will be plenty of time to negotiate these once an offer is on the table.
