Business Compliance Manager
The Office for Product Safety and Standards

Salary: National: £53,560 - £60,118; London: £57,026 - £63,481

Help us remove unsafe construction products from the UK market.

Sitting with the Department for Business & Trade, The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) plays a vital role in everyday life. As a regulatory team, we hold an interesting remit in that we don't just address market failures, but we also champion growth, innovation and efficiency. That's because while we do indeed hold organisations accountable for maintaining the highest standards in the products that they are buying and selling, we also act as an advisory body in which we promote positive action and influence behaviour. This ultimately enables us to protect people and places, and helps UK businesses thrive - all of which makes for a deeply exciting place in which to pursue your career goals.

The regulation of construction products was recently added to our list of responsibilities, and as such, we are now in need of an ambitious Business Compliance Manager who will help us enforce the relevant regulations, and improve safety and performance standards in construction products that are being traded in the UK. This is a new challenge for us, so we are looking for someone who has the vision to plan and develop our regulatory capacity in this sector. Defining our operational approach and seeing to it that we have the right people in our team to achieve our goals, you will have plenty of autonomy as the role develops, so you may soon find yourself managing a small team!

Rolling your sleeves up and getting directly involved in investigations and interventions, this is a great chance to take enforcement actions against those who aren't meeting your expectations, while you will help many businesses thrive as they comply with your targeted advice. Establishing a partnership approach to working with other regulatory partners (such as the Building Safety Regulator), you will be encouraged to lead multi-disciplinary teams to tackle emerging regulatory issues, so there is real scope to make a difference.

We are looking for someone with a creative and flexible approach, who can handle everything from overseeing investigations around the UK, through to mentoring less experienced Officers in their work - so we are looking for an all-rounder with a determination to make positive change happen within the sector! Coming from a regulatory compliance background (though we don't mind which sector you have experience in) you will be well-versed in the nuances of investigating suspected non-compliance. As such, you will have the ability to understand technical information, and you will have exceptional problem-solving and analytical capabilities. With the ability to translate your knowledge both verbally and in writing, you will be keen to share expertise to help businesses comply with our standards. It goes without saying that you will be unafraid to challenge where required, and you will bring both leadership and influencing skills to the role. As a results-focused individual, you will have a sharp eye for detail and you will enjoy planning and delivering complex work plans.

In turn, we will see to it that you are able to achieve your professional goals, while also enjoying a great work-life balance. As a member of our friendly and inclusive team, you will find a unique working proposition in which we are keen to hear your ideas and grow the team accordingly. We can also offer you a competitive benefits package that includes access to a desirable civil service pension scheme. So if you are ready to help us and enforce standards that will keep people safe, then we would be delighted to receive your application.
