Financial Accounting Manager

Gleeson Recruitment Group are seeking an experienced Financial Accounting Manager to take ownership of the financial accounting, statutory reporting, and tax compliance for a complex UK-based business. This is a senior, hands-on role with significant responsibility for ensuring accurate financial reporting, robust controls, and full compliance with UK tax and VAT requirements.

As Financial Accounting Manager you will lead core accounting activities while acting as the key point of contact for auditors, HMRC, and external advisors.

Financial Accounting & Reporting

• Own the month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting.

• Prepare statutory accounts in line with UK GAAP / IFRS.

• Maintain and improve balance sheet integrity, including reconciliations and controls.

• Lead the external audit process and manage auditor relationships.

Tax Compliance & VAT

• Full responsibility for UK tax compliance, including corporation tax computations and submissions.

• Prepare, review, and submit VAT returns, ensuring accuracy and compliance with HMRC requirements.

• Manage VAT reporting, reconciliations, and queries, including partial exemption or complex VAT treatments where applicable.

• Act as the internal subject matter expert on tax and VAT matters, advising the wider finance team and stakeholders.

• Liaise with external tax advisors and HMRC as required.

Controls, Process & Team Leadership

• Develop and enhance financial controls, policies, and procedures.

• Support and mentor junior members of the finance team.

• Drive continuous improvement across accounting and reporting processes.

• Partner with senior stakeholders to support decision-making and financial governance.

• ACA / ACCA / CIMA qualified (or equivalent).

• Strong background in financial accounting.

• Proven experience with tax compliance and VAT returns/reporting in a UK environment.

• Previous experience in practice or a large/complex business environment preferred.

• Strong technical accounting knowledge and attention to detail.

• Confident communicator with experience managing auditors and external advisors.

• Degree in accountancy, economics or business.

• Up to 75,000 base salary, depending on experience.

• Hybrid working model based in Birmingham.

• Exposure to senior stakeholders and strategic finance projects.

• A role with genuine ownership and influence over tax and financial compliance.
