Assistant Financial Accountant

Location: Liverpool
Salary: £43,000+Agile Working (1 day remote)
30 Days Holiday + 8 Bank Holidays

Overview
We are seeking an organised, detail-focused Assistant Financial Accountant, ideally studying towards CIMA or ACCA (Finalist level preferred), to support the Finance Manager and wider finance function in delivering accurate, timely reporting across multiple entities.
A background in practice would be highly advantageous, bringing strong experience in financial statements, controls, audit preparation and multi-entity reporting.

This role plays a key part in month-end and year-end processes, statutory reporting, VAT compliance, audit support and ongoing improvements to financial systems and processes.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Month-End & Year-End Reporting
  • Support the Finance Manager in monitoring and delivering month-end and year-end timetables.
  • Prepare draft financial statements for central and subsidiary entities.
  • Produce comprehensive working papers and management information.
Financial Control & Reporting
  • Undertake month-end control procedures for subsidiary companies, including:
    • Bank reconciliations
    • Control account reviews
    • Production of monthly management information
  • Support the development of enhanced financial reporting across the organisation.
  • Assist with financial analysis to inform decision-making and strategy.
Audit & Compliance
  • Support the Finance Manager in responding to external audit queries.
  • Conduct internal audits as directed by senior finance leadership.
  • Prepare and submit VAT and other tax returns as required.
  • Maintain and update standard operating procedures for key financial processes.
Banking & Financial Processing
  • Undertake payment calculations and distributions relating to incoming funds and donations.
  • Support improvements in banking processes, including training where required.
  • Assist with streamlining and consolidating banking arrangements across departments or entities.
Other Responsibilities
  • Support wider finance team projects and take on ad-hoc duties as required.
  • Contribute to ongoing improvements in financial systems, processes and controls.
Skills, Qualifications & Experience
  • Studying CIMA or ACCA (Finalist level desirable)
  • Strong technical accounting experience, ideally across multi-entity environments.
  • Proven experience in month-end processing, reconciliations and financial reporting.
  • Confident liaising with external auditors and non-finance stakeholders.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage deadlines.
  • VAT knowledge and general tax awareness (charity / not-for-profit exposure advantageous but not required).
  • Ability to build strong working relationships and work proactively within a team.
