Macildowie are recruiting for an experienced Payroll Team Leader on behalf of a well-established professional services business based in Oakham.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced payroll professional to take ownership of a busy payroll function, lead a small team and play a key role in driving service improvements.

The successful candidate will combine strong technical payroll knowledge with excellent communication skills and a proactive approach to leadership and process improvement.

The Opportunity

As Payroll Team Leader, you will oversee the delivery of payroll services across a varied client portfolio whilst managing and developing a small payroll team.

This is a hands-on position that offers the opportunity to influence processes, strengthen client relationships and contribute to the ongoing success of the payroll function.

Key Responsibilities

Payroll Operations

  • Manage end-to-end payroll processing across multiple payrolls.
  • Ensure payrolls are processed accurately and within agreed deadlines.
  • Oversee statutory payments, deductions and year-end payroll activities.
  • Ensure compliance with payroll legislation and HMRC requirements.
  • Support payroll reconciliations and reporting requirements.
  • Coordinate P11D and PAYE Settlement Agreement (PSA) activities where required.

Team Leadership

  • Lead, coach and support payroll team members.
  • Allocate workloads and monitor service delivery standards.
  • Provide technical guidance and support for complex payroll queries.
  • Act as the escalation point for payroll-related issues.

Client & Stakeholder Management

  • Build strong relationships with clients and internal stakeholders.
  • Provide expert payroll support and guidance.
  • Resolve queries effectively and professionally.
  • Deliver a consistently high standard of service.

Continuous Improvement

  • Review and improve payroll processes and procedures.
  • Identify efficiencies and opportunities for automation.
  • Support system enhancements and best-practice initiatives.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of payroll services.

About You

Essential Experience

  • Proven payroll experience within a payroll bureau, accountancy practice, outsourced payroll environment or similar.
  • Strong knowledge of UK payroll legislation, PAYE, NIC, RTI and pensions.
  • Experience managing multiple payrolls and deadlines.
  • Previous team leadership or supervisory experience.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and organisational abilities.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience supporting P11D and PSA processes.
  • Experience working in a client-facing payroll environment.
  • Payroll qualification (or working towards one).
  • Experience using payroll software systems.
