Capital Markets are the apparatus through which companies or governments raise long term funds, typically through the sales of bonds and equities, or shares. Thus the stock and bond markets are capital markets. The Capital Markets are overseen by regulatory authorities, for example the Financial Services Authority in the United Kingdom.

Primary capital markets are ones in which companies or governments raise funds through new issues of shares or bonds, whereas secondary capital markets deal in the buying and selling of existing shares or bonds.
